Parents are ordinary human beings

My darling Pari,

You’ll be told and taught this countless times that parents are super-humans for they magically created you and gifted you with life. It is a half-baked truth that has been cleverly covered in the icing of control.

Never fall for it.

We parents (including grandparents) are ordinary human beings.

We too have had our moments of meltdown, failures, falls and frustrations in the course of our lives. We weren’t always the thoughtful, clever, know-it-all just as we often come across to you. These are virtues learnt over time with experience that comes with living the gift of life.

The best thing about being ordinary is we can make mistakes and still smile for we aren’t meant to be perfect or flawless. The same way, any day when you feel you’ve been wrong, you’ve failed to feel free to come to me and share it with me for I will understand how you feel. I will know what’s on your mind for I too would have been in your shoes sometime in the past. I promise to never judge you.

We as parents might not possess super-powers to undo all wrong with a magic wand or steal all hurt in a touch but we are people who love you more than anything in this universe, even ourselves. It’s the bond of love that gives us the magical strength, the added instincts, the insight and the aura of knowing the unsaid.

We too are wrong, we too fail to be just no matter how much we’d want to be. In those times, please remember that your mum too is just a human being and forgive her.

” One of the most powerful truths we can offer our children is the knowledge thatwe’re all still learning.

None of us have arrived; we all have room to grow. This free our kids from
expecting perfection of themselves-or anyone else- because  they know that
life is a journey, from day one.” ~ Erica Layne

With loads of love and blessings,

Mum

  2. You know something ME, every time i read such posts from you, R’s mom and other mommy bloggers – I feel grateful to have read this. I don’t know whether you know it or not but in this short span of time I have learnt many things from you.You people inspire me to actually be a friend along with being a parent to one’s child. I really admire the way you do this and am sure when Pari grows she will be proud of you.

As for me, currently I am undergoing training with you all lovely people out here to implement these skills once I have my own! 🙂

  3. This is the best piece of advice I have ever read.. It is important to realize that in any relationship, especially that of a parent-child , unrealistic expectations, granting super human status can be disastrous. I am going to save this one to pass it on to Diya…

  9. Simple, touching and so true! Must say, Pari is a lucky child to have someone so clear-headed in her life to look up to. Because that will be out of true respect, open and free, and not out of fear disguised as respect. 🙂

  10. So wonderfully said, ME. The most wonderful part is that even though parents do not have super powers per se, they try their best. To be patient, loving, understanding. That is what makes them super. 🙂
