Quit playing games

It’s been a while since I realized that all I say and do is being followed, copied and understood by Pari. Though I still err on trying to act smart with her, only to end up re-learning the said lesson again.

Pari is very fascinated by small kids and babies. Saying she loves them is quite an understatement for you can actually see her eyes light up in the middle of a tantrum or crying session if you show her a baby. She calls them all ‘Chhota Baby’ (small baby) pronounced as ‘Chh baba‘ by her. The irony being on 99% of occasions the babies in question are actually elder to her, but she likes to believe otherwise.

So ever since Pari learnt to utter ‘mumma’ I enjoy confusing her. I show her pictures of women in newspaper or magazines and say, “Dekho Mumma” (see mum) but she just smiles and leaves it at that.

A couple of days back, I was busy filling up some paperwork and was about to stick a few passport size pictures of mine. Just then Pari came to me to check what was keeping me busy. In an attempt to distract her I passed on a magazine lying next to me pointing to the model on the cover and said, “Dekho Mumma aur chhota baby” (see mum and a small baby). I had thought she’ll spend a few moments admiring the picture and I’ll finish my work in the meantime.

Within two seconds the magazine was on the floor and she attacked my passport size photos. Scared that she might tear them I plunged to get them back just when I noticed her looking at the pictures with great concentration. She was actually looking at the pictures and then at my face as if comparing the two.

Worried that she might crush them, I requested her to hand them to me, just when she pointing her finger at the picture with a sweet smile uttered, “Mumma” and giggled.

Well, I am learning my lessons albeit slowly.

  2. So cute….please write more about Pari’s antics at least two post per week about Pari to banta hai 😀
    Mishti does not call me mamma directly but if anyone else asks ‘Where is Mamma?’…she looks at me & smirks. I ask her so many times ‘say mamma’…and she presses her lips & runs away, however whenever anyone is irritating her by tickling or anything else she would shout Mamm..Mamm.Ma 🙂

      Same here N, Pari too blushes and runs away on many occasions if you ask her to say Mumma, Nana or any other thing, but when she feels like calling out our names she does so 🙂

    Its amazing how quickly kids learn things and how good they are at registering new things. Lots of love to Pari.

  15. My sis-in-law’s 2 year old also has a fascination for babies. When we went to see him off at the airport, he met a girl almost his age and was so happy. The girl too was beaming and both of them showed each other their stomach by raising their T shirts and putting the corner shyly in their mouths. When I asked him what the hell was going on, he pointed at the girl and said exitedly – ‘Baby!!!!!’
    Yeah, right. 🙂
    It was a truely Hum Tum moment.

  16. I have had the same experience with my son.If he comes across a couple while turning the pages of a magazine,he’ll immediately scream out “Mamma and Daddy”…that brings a smile upon my face 🙂

  22. Kids are way too smarter than we give them credit for. Without your even realising Pari is keeping your enthusiasm for Life ALIVE.
    When my first born was a toddler, she used to love playing with her Daddy’s mobile. We got her a toy phone which looked ditto complete with antenna (and actually weighed as much, the zamana of the indestructible Nokia 5110). She would take one look at the toy, throw it hard on the floor and stretch her hands for the original. You really can’t fool them, except may be emotionally. You pretend to cry or act hurt and they’ll be ready to fend for you, kissing, hugging and giving you soothing words as you would do for them.

    this reminds me of Samu. When she was learning Animals and their children names in Nursey, this is what happened
    Me: Kitten
    Samu:Cat
    Me:Puppy
    Samu: Dog
    Me:Calf
    Samu: Cow
    Me: Samruddhi
    Samu (after thinking): Mamma
    this was when she was 3 years old…thanks Era for taking me through these special moments. These precious ones will always be there in our hearts. only mom’s can understand the feelings behind this:)
