Why can’t I stop overeating when I desperately want to lose weight?

It’s over an year and the pandemic has refused to give up its control on our lives. Is this making your motivation and determination to make THIS year the year when you’ll lose all your weight dwindle?

Have you been working hard at staying determined to change your lifestyle to help you stay healthy?

All this while beating the odds of stress, anxiety, juggling household chores, working from home, being stuck indoors and more?

Chances are there might be occasions when you catch yourself eating when you aren’t hungry or overeating because you were so distracted that you didn’t notice it happening.

If that’s you, read on to understand why do we overeat when we so desperately want to lose weight.

It’s something I have experienced myself. Here’s what I have learnt from my experience.

We overeat simply because,

We wanted to eat at that moment.

We decided to say YES to the food and NO to our dreams.

The only thing that causes us to overeat is an urge, a craving or want that we’ve been resisting.

Have you noticed what comes just before a craving?

A thought that tries to trigger and help justify the want to eat.

Thoughts like…

“I want it.”

“It looks so good.”

“I don’t want to miss out.”

We eat because today we want to eat.

Because we have always reacted to stress, fatigue and overwhelm by trying to drown them in a dose of comfort food.

Our overeats are SIMPLE. And that’s why they are so frustrating.

If our overeats are complicated, then we have an excuse as to why we can’t quit doing them.

If they are simple, then we are stuck with wanting to eat and not eating.

It’s a catch 22.

And mind you, even after having lost all my weight, I catch myself overeating at times.

On such occasions, it helps to remember – Losing weight doesn’t mean being miserable, hungry, and denied all the good stuff.

It means planning the good stuff and saying no when I was acting entitled. When I was behaving like someone who deserves to eat what she wants when she wants it.

I finally realized what I deserved was to quit suffering with my weight and body image every damn day.

I deserved better than letting my hard work at creating a healthy life go vain simply because I couldn’t manage my thoughts around food at a time when I wasn’t even hungry.

When I thought more about what I wanted out of life, I also made peace with the fact that sometimes I was just going to want to overeat and didn’t do it.

It wasn’t lots of fun or exciting but I allowed myself to start finding fun and excitement in new ways.

Without all the overeating, I found I had time to figure out what I wanted to do in this life.

And I started doing it.

That’s what I want for everyone.

So just for today, choose your dreams over wanting something to eat at the moment.

Try it.

It feels so good to have our own back.
